![]() ![]() ![]() As mysteriously as it all started, the screaming went away and the next morning I married Oliver Jones - the Oliver Jones - and we just about lived happily ever after. To this day, I don't know why that happened to me. There was no foreseeable problem that I could articulate. I had a job waiting for me when I returned from my honeymoon. I was marrying the man of my dreams in a prototypical white clapboard New England church, and the reception - a lavish one with white-gloved waiters and Beluga caviar - was going to be held in my parents' backyard. I was barely nineteen, a straight-A student fresh out of Wellesley College and in 1976 that was still an accomplishment. I watched the lights come on in different houses - blue and yellow, blinking like Christmas - and wondered what was happening to me. We lived in a button-down suburb of Boston, and we were waking up the neighbors one by one. Even with my mouth closed, I continued - the high, shrill note of a nocturnal animal. My parents came into the room and put their arms around me they patted my head and smoothed my hair, fine, and I still couldn't stop screaming. The night before I got married I woke up, screaming, from my sleep. ![]()

The people are so disgusted with how depressing Orpheus's songs are now that they kill him, allowing him to finally be reunited with his love. The journey back to the land of the living is more difficult than his journey in, but when Orpheus is almost done he can't bear it any longer and looks over his shoulder, causing Eurydice’s spirit to decent back to the Underworld. ![]() Hades tells Orpheus that he will allow Eurydice's soul to follow him back to the land of the living so long as Orpheus never looks behind him. When he arrives, Hades and Persephone listen to his melancholy ballad. His beautiful playing helps him to get across the river Styx and past Cerberus, the three-headed dog. Stuff My Stocking: M/M Romance Stories that are Nice and… Naughty A SHINY NEW TOY by M.J. ![]() ![]() I would recommend the book to readers of dark fantasy who enjoyed series like The First Law and The Black Company. Compared to the Prince of Nothing series, it's not as grim. Other than the constant cursing and killing (which is more or less expected in a story like this) there are really only a handful of "disturbing" scenes, which admittedly, would probably cause squeamish readers to put the book down completely. The novel has a reputation for being darker than dark, reaching the very depths of written depravity but honestly, I wouldn't take it that far. Examples include pyromaniac wizards, narcissistic masterminds that are as powerful as they believe they are, kleptomaniac assassins and multi personality mirrorists. It has a magic system that is entirely based on mental illnesses.and this aspect of the novel is very original and refreshing. ![]() It takes place in a dark, unmerciful and utterly insane world.
